SCRANTON, LACKWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Officials in Lackawanna County and the City of Scranton have extended Code Blue Frigid Weather Alerts as dangerously cold temperatures are expected overnight in the coming days.
The Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency and city officials say the first alert will be in effect from 8 p.m. Sunday, January 4, through 7 a.m. Monday, January 5, with wind chills expected to drop to around 13 degrees. A second Code Blue will follow from 8 p.m. Monday, January 5, through 7 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, as wind chills dip to near 22 degrees.
A Code Blue is issued when temperatures or wind chills are forecast to fall below 20 degrees, activating emergency measures designed to protect vulnerable populations, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness.
During the alerts, emergency shelter and warming locations will be available in Scranton, including:
St. Anthony’s Haven, 409 Olive Street, open from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.Weston Field House, 982 Providence Road, opening at 7:30 p.m.Community Intervention Center (CIC), 445 North Sixth Avenue, open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours if needed
Officials urge residents to check on neighbors, limit time outdoors, and seek shelter if necessary. Another update on the weather alert status is expected on Monday, January 5.
